The pedestrian bridge at Box Hill TAFE connects two key campus buildings and is used daily by students, staff and visitors. Years of exposure to Melbourne's weather had left the exterior steelwork with peeling paint and visible rust, affecting both its appearance and long-term protection.
During our inspection, we found the bridge's exterior steelwork showing clear signs of weathering, with peeling paint and visible rust across exposed surfaces.
Before any new coating could be applied, it was essential to prepare the surfaces correctly. Without proper preparation, contaminants, loose paint and deteriorated coatings can compromise adhesion and reduce the long-term performance of a protective coating system.


While the bridge's peeling paint and visible rust affected its appearance, they also highlighted the importance of restoring the existing protective coating before further weather exposure could take its toll.
Simply painting over deteriorated surfaces would not provide the long-term durability expected from a commercial protective coating system.
Achieving a lasting result depended on thorough surface preparation and careful application across the bridge's exposed steelwork. The elevated structure also required specialised access equipment to ensure every area could be safely prepared and coated to a consistent standard.



The painting process followed a meticulous three-coat system:
Achieving a durable, long-lasting finish required more than simply applying new paint. We followed a proven preparation and coating process to ensure the bridge's exposed steelwork was protected against ongoing weather exposure.
Before any coatings were applied, the bridge was thoroughly washed using sugar soap to remove dirt, grime and surface contaminants. Proper surface preparation created a clean foundation for the new coating system and helped maximise its long-term performance.

One coat of Dulux 1Step Prep Water Based Primer, Sealer & Undercoat was applied to create a solid foundation for the coating system. The primer promotes strong adhesion between the prepared surface and the protective topcoats, helping deliver a durable, long-lasting finish.

To complete the system, we applied two coats of Dulux Weathershield. Chosen for its exceptional durability and weather resistance, it provides a tough protective finish that helps defend the bridge against Melbourne's harsh outdoor conditions while restoring its appearance.
Every stage of the project was completed with careful attention to detail to ensure a consistent, high-quality finish across the entire structure.
Working on an elevated pedestrian bridge required the right equipment and a strong focus on safety. To deliver the project safely and efficiently, we:
